Pakistan and Bahrain are stepping up efforts to finalise a free trade agreement between Pakistan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Bahrain has pledged to speed up the approval process. The development followed high-level talks in Islamabad on October 8, 2026. Both countries want to strengthen trade and build closer economic ties.
Ishaq Dar Holds Talks With Bahrain
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, met Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. They co-chaired the third session of the Pakistan-Bahrain Joint Ministerial Commission. The two sides reviewed existing cooperation and discussed new ways to support businesses and investors.
Dar said the proposed Pakistan-GCC free trade agreement was close to signing. He also indicated that approval from one GCC member state might still be needed. Pakistan and the GCC concluded negotiations on the agreement in September 2023, but the deal has not yet been formally signed and implemented.
Trade and Investment Opportunities
The proposed trade deal aims to improve economic links between Pakistan and the six GCC countries. These countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The agreement could create better opportunities for businesses and help expand trade between Pakistan and the Gulf region.
During the meeting, both countries also agreed to establish a government-level Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment. This group will support regular discussions and help move agreed plans forward.
Energy and Other Sectors in Focus
Pakistan and Bahrain also discussed cooperation in energy, agriculture, food security, information technology, health, education, labour and maritime affairs. The two sides plan to hold an energy working group meeting next month. Officials will discuss possible cooperation in oil, gas and minerals.
The talks also covered logistics, telecommunications and other areas where both countries can work together. Stronger business links could support investment, create opportunities for companies and improve economic cooperation.
What the Trade Agreement Could Mean
A Pakistan-GCC free trade agreement could strengthen Pakistan’s access to Gulf markets. It may also support exporters, attract investment and improve commercial links with a region that plays an important role in Pakistan’s economy.
However, the agreement is not yet in force. Officials must complete the remaining approval steps before the deal can take effect. Pakistan and Bahrain have renewed their commitment to move the process forward and expand economic cooperation.
The latest talks mark another step towards closer trade relations between Pakistan, Bahrain and the wider Gulf region. Businesses will be watching for further announcements on the agreement’s approval and signing.
