The federal government has set a clear deadline for the Islamabad electric tram feasibility study, signaling renewed momentum for modern public transport in the capital. Mohsin Naqvi inaugurated a new electric bus depot and charging stations at Zero Point, Islamabad, and directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to complete the tram feasibility report within three months.

During the briefing, officials shared initial plans for introducing an electric tram system focused to make reduction in traffic blockage and promoting eco-friendly transport.

To ensure a professional and data-driven assessment, CDA has engaged the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) to conduct the feasibility study. The minister has emphasized the timely completion so authorities can move from planning to execution without further delays.

Proposed Routes for Islamabad Electric Tram

Under the proposal, the electric tram is ready to operate on two major routes. The first route will connect Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park. Importantly, Lake View Park is also serving as the proposed starting point for the much-discussed Murree Glass Train project. By linking these initiatives, planners hope to create a broader tourism and transport network.

The second tram route will run from Rawat to Lake View Park, offering daily commuters a reliable and modern alternative to road travel. These routes aim to reduce travel time, cut fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions in the capital city.

Although authorities have discussed the tram project for years, progress remained slow. However, officials now indicate stronger political will, especially because of its connection to other regional development.

Revival of Rawalpindi-Islamabad Railway Service

Besides the tram project, the government has left no stone unturned to revive discussions about restoring the Rawalpindi-Islamabad railway service. Following directions from Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Railways and the CDA have reviewed the proposal.

If approved, the railway service is going to operate between Margalla Railway Station and Saddar Rawalpindi, providing commuters with a modern and efficient transport option. However, officials remain cautious. A similar service launched in the 1990s shut down within three months due to low ridership.

This time, planners are aiming to learn from past mistakes. By focusing on feasibility, demand forecasting and integration with existing transport systems is key to ensuring long-term sustainability.

With a firm deadline now in place, the Islamabad electric tram feasibility study will mark the beginning of a new era in public transport for the twin cities.
