In a significant move to modernize the capital’s public transport system, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce an electric tram service in Islamabad. This initiative is assumed to be the part of broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainable urban mobility.
Feasibility Study Ratified
Chairman CDA, Mohammad Ali Randhawa, has released some the update following a high-level meeting with the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) held on Thursday.
He confirmed that a feasibility study for the tram project has been officially approved.
“Electric buses are already operational. Now we are moving toward electric trams,” Randhawa stated.
“A feasibility study will help us take the next step.”
The move aligns with directives from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister, both of whom have highly emphasized on eco-friendly urban development.
Focus on Soft Wheel Electric Trams
The meeting focused on:
• Operationalizing Soft Wheel Electric Trams, which are quieter and more efficient than traditional trams.
• Expanding and improving the existing electric feeder bus network that is already serving many parts of the city.
Randhawa instructed relevant departments to finalize the feasibility study swiftly so the project could transition into the implementation phase.
Proposed Tram Routes Under Study
Sources within CDA revealed that a Chinese consultancy firm may be hired to carry out the detailed feasibility study.
Initially, four major tram routes are being considered, including:
• Rawat to Faisal Mosque via Islamabad Expressway
• Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport via Srinagar Highway
• Two additional routes along other high-traffic corridors are also under review.
These routes have been chosen based on their high passenger volume, strategic importance, and connectivity with other public transport nodes.
Toward a Greener Islamabad
With electric buses already in operation, this new initiative signals Islamabad’s growing commitment to sustainable transport solutions. The tram system, once operational, will:
• Reduce urban congestion
• Lower pollution levels
• Provide affordable and efficient transport for residents
The CDA’s efforts are a promising step toward making Islamabad a modern, green, and commuter-friendly capital.
