In a major step toward easing traffic congestion in the capital, Islamabad’s Srinagar Highway is being expanded with an additional third lane from Jinnah Square (Serena Interchange) to Murree Road. The upgradation scheme is meant to improve traffic flow and connectivity, especially for commuters entering the city from the Murree side.

This move is closely linked to the upcoming inauguration of the Jinnah Square underpass, a key development in the Rs. 4.2 billion infrastructure project that is making transformation or necessary changes in the area. As per the Capital Development Authority, nearly 80% of the underpass work is already complete, and final touches are underway. The project is on track to be officially inaugurated on May 22.

Once operational, the underpass will provide direct access from Murree Road to Srinagar Highway, saving commuters from the hassle of detouring through Dhokri Chowk, which has long been a traffic bottleneck.

 Smart Budgeting and Fast-Tracked Development

The expansion project is being funded through Rs. 250 million in savings from the Jinnah Square development, along with an additional Rs. 600 million approved for the new lane and related infrastructure. In an efficient move to avoid delays, the CDA board approved a 15% scope extension, allowing the existing contractor to handle the new work without initiating a fresh tendering process.

This fast-tracked approach reflects the government’s renewed focus on efficient urban development.

More Improvements Around Jinnah Square

In addition to the lane expansion, the CDA recently floated new tenders worth Rs. 1 billion for structural improvements and road widening around Jinnah Square. It also includes the construction of a new slip road connecting Globe Chowk to Srinagar Highway, intended to further solve the traffic pressure in the busy zone.

During a recent site visit, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of timely completion and instructed officials to ensure quality landscaping to enhance the area’s aesthetics. CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that three out of four planned slip roads are already operational, offering partial relief to daily commuters.

Islamabad’s road network is moving a step closer to becoming more efficient, accessible, and modern with the latest upgradation steps.
