In a nostalgic move to reconnect the public with Pakistan’s aviation heritage, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced the complete restoration of the historic aircraft and planetarium located at Chauburji Chowk. The project, timed to conclude by 14th of August, is expected to become a centerpiece for Independence Day celebrations.

What is included in the restoration plan?

The aircraft, which has stood grounded and weather-beaten since the 1980s, will soon be given a new life. According to PIA officials, the restoration plan includes

  • A fresh coat of paint
  • Refurbished seating
  • Full makeover of the cockpit, returning it to its original state

The revival aims to create an engaging and educational experience, especially for children and aviation enthusiasts who have long awaited the chance to step inside a real aircraft.

Project emerging as a blend of education and recreation

The adjoining planetarium is considered to be part of the renovation project. Once reopened, visitors will be able to enjoy both attractions, which PIA hopes is going to emerge as a blend of education and recreation. Ticket prices have been kept affordable at Rs 100 for children and Rs 150 for adults, guaranteeing families can easily access the experience.

The initiative is being led by Deputy General Manager Marketing of PIA, Athar Hassan Awan, who said the project was more than just a facelift: it’s about preserving history and inspiring future generations.

This is not PIA’s first effort of its kind. The airline previously restored a grounded plane in Karachi, which became a very famous family attraction, and now plans to carry out a similar project in Peshawar.

Restoration aligned with airline’s broader rebranding efforts

A PIA spokesperson added that the restoration is showing strong alignment with the airline’s broader rebranding efforts, especially as PIA is all set to resume flights to Europe and the UK. Beyond offering families a unique weekend activity, the project is working to ignite national pride and depict Pakistan’s aviation legacy.

The revival of the Chauburji aircraft is not considered to be just a project for most of the people living in Lahore—it’s the return of a beloved landmark, one that make promises to inspire wonder in children and nostalgia among adults.
