In an inspiring breakthrough, Pakistani scientists have created a new variety of rose that not only looks and smells beautiful but could also transform farming incomes across the country.

Developed by experts at the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), this variety — named Rosa Centifolia UAF — promises both resilience against rising temperatures and exciting business opportunities in the $60 billion global floriculture market.

A Blooming Business Opportunity

According to Dr Iftikhar Ahmad, Professor of Floriculture at UAF, just one acre of land planted with around 5,000 of these roses can produce nearly one kilogram of premium-quality rose oil. This oil alone can fetch up to Rs 1.5 million per acre annually, offering farmers a new, high-value crop.

Even after deducting costs, the net profit could reach an impressive Rs 740,000 per acre — far more than many traditional crops.

Multiple Revenue Streams for Farmers

The beauty of Rosa Centifolia UAF lies in its flexibility. Farmers who cannot afford to invest in oil extraction can still earn well through alternative products. For example:

Rose petals: Selling fresh petals can generate about Rs 400,000 per acre, with net profits of Rs 260,000.

Rose water: Processing flowers into rose water can yield nearly 50,000 liters per acre, valued at Rs 1.5 million, with profits of Rs 600,000.

Rose jam (gulqand): Converting petals into jam can bring in Rs 750,000 in sales, with Rs 240,000 in profit.

This means both small-scale farmers and larger agribusinesses will be able to get benefits, depending on their investment capacity.

Built for Pakistan’s Climate

It is not like the traditional Surkha rose, which undergoes the process of wilting in extreme heat, this new variety is capable of surviving even at 40°C. It produces fragrant, bunch-like flowers year-round, making it highly suitable for Pakistan’s changing climate.

This rose has a lifespan of 12–15 years and an annual yield of 500–700 flowers per plant, it offers farmers a stable, long-term source of income.

A Global-Standard Rose

Experts note that the oil quality of Rosa Centifolia UAF is comparable to the world-famous Rosa Damascena, while its rose water and jam quality even surpass the commonly grown Rosa chinensis.

With such potential, this variety could boost Pakistan’s share in the global floriculture market, while also supporting local industries and farmers alike.

All-inclusively, this rose is more than a flower — it’s emerged as an economic opportunity, a climate-smart solution, and a clear depiction of how science can open new doors for Pakistan’s agriculture.
