In a landmark step toward improving passenger experience, Pakistan Railways has launched a station modernization project starting with the installation of escalators at key railway stations. The initiative, initially rolled out in Lahore, Karachi, and Multan, aims to ease mobility for millions of travelers—especially the elderly, women, and children.
Phase One Begins in Lahore
The first phase is already underway at Lahore Railway Station, one of the country’s busiest and most historic transit hubs. Constructed in 1859 during the British colonial era, Lahore Station handles hundreds of thousands of commuters daily. Yet, despite its importance, it has long lacked modern amenities such as escalators.
Under this initiative:
• Escalators are being installed on platforms 2 and 4
• The project cost for Lahore alone stands at Rs 60 million
• The escalators are expected to be fully operational by June 25
The Minister for Railways emphasized that the upgrade would offer greater comfort and accessibility, particularly for passengers burdened with luggage or those who face mobility challenges.
Karachi and Multan Next in Line
Following Lahore, similar work will commence at Karachi Railway Station—another critical transport hub—within the same month. Multan Railway Station is also included in this modernization plan, which makes the integral component of a larger strategy to overhaul outdated rail infrastructure across the country.

Pakistan Railways has allocated Rs120 million for the entire first phase of the project, with the promise of expanding it to other cities such as Rawalpindi and Peshawar in the next rollout.
More Than Just Escalators
The modernization effort doesn’t end with escalators. The department is also investing in:
• Comfortable new waiting areas
• Better passenger facilities
• Improved signage and access for differently-abled persons
With nearly 50 million passengers traveling by train on yearly basis, officials say it’s time for Pakistan Railways to match modern standards and make train travel more dignified and accessible.
This initiative marks a positive shift toward passenger-centric reforms in a system that has long been criticized for outdated facilities.
