Pakistan has taken a major step toward faster internet and digital growth after completing its first major 5G spectrum auction in March 2026. The auction, organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority in Islamabad, successfully sold 480 megahertz of spectrum for $507 million. This move is expected to significantly improve internet speed, network coverage, and digital services across the country.

The auction saw strong participation from three major telecom operators: Jazz Pakistan, Ufone, and Zong. These companies competed mainly for the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands, which are considered essential for delivering reliable 5G mobile services.

Jazz secured the largest share of the spectrum

Among the participants, Jazz secured the largest share of spectrum, purchasing frequencies across several bands. The company acquired 20 MHz in the 700 MHz band, 50 MHz in the 2300 MHz band, 70 MHz in the 2600 MHz band, and 50 MHz in the 3500 MHz band. Ufone purchased 180 MHz of spectrum, primarily focusing on the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. Meanwhile, Zong obtained 110 MHz, strengthening its position in high-speed mobile services.

As per the telecom experts, spectrum is often labeled as “invisible infrastructure”, mean’s its infrastructure is invisible. Users are not capable of seeing it, but still, it plays a critical role in delivering

  1. faster mobile data
  2. stable connectivity
  3. improved network performance

Faster internet is the backbone to support modern technologies

During the inauguration ceremony, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb emphasized that digital technology is a tool to improve economic growth. He explained that faster internet can support modern technologies such as AI, blockchain, and Web 3.0, which are becoming important parts of the global digital economy.

Similarly, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja described the auction as a historic moment for the country’s digital transformation. She highlighted that Pakistan has been running on limited spectrum capacity for decades, which has contributed to slow internet speeds and connectivity problems.

With the new auction, the country’s spectrum availability will significantly increase, which means telecom operators will have more capacity to deliver

  1. Faster
  2. More stable mobile internet

However, industry experts are of the view that 5G rollout will happen gradually. Large cities and commercial areas will likely receive the service first, while rural regions will be covered in later phases. In the early stages, the technology may mainly benefit businesses, tech companies, and industries that highly depend on high-speed connectivity.

Still, everyday users are expected to notice improvements in 4G network performance within the upcoming few months, as telecom companies upgrade their infrastructure after acquiring new spectrum.

In addition to the auction, the government is also focusing on expanding

  1. Fiber networks
  2. Satellite internet services
  3. International data cables.

How much faster will 5G internet be?

5G technology is expected to deliver much higher speeds than current networks. Early estimates suggest that 50–100 Mbps speeds are significantly faster than the average 4G speeds of around 20 Mbps. Besides, it will also minimize any kind of delay, making online gaming, video calls, and streaming smoother.

Do users need a new phone to use 5G?

Most of the masses will not need a new SIM card, but they are going to get a 5G-compatible smartphone, which could show compatibility with 5G. Older 4G devices cannot connect to 5G networks, so users will need to upgrade their phones to experience the new speeds.

Why are these projects designed?

These projects are specifically designed to improve connectivity across Pakistan and reduce long-term internet costs.

Overall, the 5G spectrum auction marks an important step toward building a stronger Digital Pakistan, improving communication, supporting remote work, and enabling new opportunities in education, healthcare, and online businesses.

FAQs

When is 5G expected to start in Pakistan?

After the successful auction in March 2026, telecom companies are preparing their infrastructure. Commercial 5G services are likely to start commencing around mid-2026, possibly between June and July. The first rollout will mainly cover major cities such as

  1. Islamabad
  2. Karachi
  3. Lahore
  4. Peshawar
  5. Quetta

Which telecom operators secured spectrum in the 5G auction?

Three telecom companies have taken part and won spectrum in the auction. Those Telcom companies are

  1. Jazz Pakistan
  2. Ufone
  3. Zong

Among them, the largest share is currently being held by Jazz, which will help it expand both urban and rural connectivity.

Will 5G make mobile packages highly expensive?

Regulators keep on saying that the goal is better, faster, and state-of-the-art internet facilities without putting pressure on the consumers for high price tags. However, since higher speeds encourage more data usage, some users may choose larger internet packages based on their needs.

How will 5G help ordinary people in Pakistan?

Beyond faster browsing, 5G has the guts to improve online education, remote work opportunities, telemedicine, and smart city systems. Moreover, it is capable of supporting digital businesses and startups, assisting in creating new jobs and strengthening Pakistan’s growing digital economy.
