In a welcome boost to Pakistan’s development ambitions, Kuwait has stepped forward with a $25 million concessional loan — roughly Rs 7 billion — to help finance the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project.
The agreement, signed at the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Islamabad, marks another milestone in Pakistan’s growing partnership with the Gulf nation.
The loan, provided by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), is part of a broader $100 million commitment Kuwait has made to support the project.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and WAPDA were present at the signing ceremony, which highlighted the shared vision of both countries for sustainable development and clean energy.
Strengthening Bonds and Building the Future
During the ceremony, Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim expressed deep gratitude to the Kuwaiti government, calling the support a reflection of the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Kuwait.
He said the fresh funding would help accelerate construction on the Mohmand Dam — a project seen as vital for addressing Pakistan’s water scarcity, energy shortages, and flood risks.
“This partnership is not just about finances; it’s about faith in Pakistan’s progress,” Karim noted, adding that the project would play a major role in improving livelihoods and boosting economic stability.
Why the Mohmand Dam Matters
The Mohmand Dam, once completed, will store over 1.2 million acre-feet of water, generate around 800 megawatts of clean electricity, and provide safe drinking water to Peshawar and nearby areas. It will also serve as a critical defense against seasonal flooding, protecting thousands of families in the region.
Kuwait’s Ongoing Commitment
Speaking at the event, Fahad Hesham H.A.S. Aldousari, Deputy Head of Kuwait’s Mission in Pakistan, reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s growth, particularly in sectors like water management and renewable energy.
He praised the Mohmand Dam as a “project of hope,” saying it symbolizes cooperation, trust, and a shared vision for a more sustainable future.
This new agreement not only strengthens bilateral ties but also represents a step toward a cleaner, more resilient Pakistan, ready to meet the challenges of the future.
