In a move set to redefine urban life in the capital, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially started working on transforming a section of Blue Area into Islamabad’s first pedestrian-only street.

The major aim behind this Rs 240 million project is the manufacturing of a vibrant, car-free zone designed for leisure, dining, and shopping — offering residents and visitors a modern urban experience in the heart of the city.

A Step Toward a Walkable Islamabad

The new pedestrian zone is going to stretch approximately 800 meters, covering the busy strip from Savour Foods to Khyber Plaza along Jinnah Avenue. Vehicles will be prohibited within this zone, permitting people to walk freely and safely without traffic congestion or pollution.

The CDA has emphasized that this project is not just an infrastructural upgrade but a shift toward sustainable and people-friendly urban design.

Facilities and Design Highlights

To accommodate visitors, parking arrangements are being made at the multi-storey parking plaza, which can be capable of holding approximately 950 vehicles, with an additional 150 spaces near Khyber Plaza. Inside the pedestrian street, the CDA plans to introduce electric carts to assist elderly citizens, children, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring accessibility for all.

The walkway will be lined with food outlets from top chains, digital installations, and interactive LED screens at the entry and exit points. These digital features will provide entertainment, real-time updates, and public information, making the area both functional and lively.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

According to CDA officials, the project design was finalized after consultations with Blue Area traders to ensure that it supports commercial activity while enhancing public convenience. Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza stated that the goal is to create a “walk-and-shop” experience where people can enjoy quality food, shop from their favorite stores, and relax in a safe, clean, and modern environment.

“This is an ideal place for a family-friendly food street,” he said. “We aim to complete the entire project, including lighting and landscaping, within two months.”

CDA Project: A Model for Future Urban Projects

This Project of constructing Islamabad’s first pedestrian-only street is considered to be integral component of CDA’s broader vision to reimagine urban spaces of Islamabad. If this gets successful, the pedestrian-only concept will be replicated in Jinnah Super Market and other key commercial hubs.

The plan aligns with global trends promoting sustainable, walkable cities that encourage social interaction and control carbon emissions.

Reviving Islamabad’s Food Culture

Islamabad currently has only one designated food street — Melody Food Park — which once thrived but later struggled due to parking shortages and poor maintenance. Despite recent renovation efforts supported by the Azerbaijani government, the area still encountering various challenges.

In contrast, the Blue Area pedestrian street is being built with modern planning, safety features, and sufficient parking, intending to avoid past mistakes. Officials hope it will become a signature attraction for both locals and tourists, reviving the city’s food and nightlife culture.

Future Developments on the Horizon

In addition to this project, the CDA also making plans to develop “Capital Street” near the area of Shakarparian, featuring

  • Restaurants
  • Art workshops
  • An expo hall
  • Recreational spaces

While land has already been allocated, development is anticipated to start after the completion of the Blue Area pedestrian zone.

With this initiative, Islamabad is leaving no stone unturned by taking a bold step toward greener, pedestrian-friendly urban development, signaling a future where the capital’s public spaces are designed for cars and the masses also.
