In a landmark move to address the city’s growing water needs, the Punjab government has announced two major water infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 70 billion for Faisalabad. The projects aim to provide clean drinking water to residents and promote sustainable resource management in one of Pakistan’s fastest-growing urban centers.

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, where WASA Faisalabad Managing Director Sohail Qadir Cheema gave a detailed briefing on the ambitious plans.

Initiative includes various projects

The initiatives include a surface water treatment plant costing Rs 14.6 billion and a wastewater treatment facility estimated at over Rs 56 billion. Both projects will be financed with the assistance of international donor agencies, depicting growing global support for environmental sustainability efforts of Pakistan.

As per the briefing, the surface water treatment plant is expected to be operational by June 2027, while the wastewater treatment facility is scheduled for completion by July 2028. Together, the plants will have the capacity to treat up to 63 million gallons of water daily, directly benefiting more than 700,000 residents in Faisalabad’s eastern areas.

One of the most important benefits of this plan is its direct benefit to households. Over 56,000 families are expected to

  • Gain reliable access to safe drinking water
  • Cutting back health risks associated with contaminated supplies

At the same time, the treated wastewater will be made best for agricultural use, a move officials say will help

  • Conserve fresh water
  • Boosting farm productivity

Project is meant for securing a healthier future for Faisalabad

“These projects are not only about infrastructure; they’re about securing a healthier future for Faisalabad’s people and ensuring smarter use of our water resources,” Secretary Mengal claimed.

He added that the government also plans to build a total of three wastewater treatment plants in the city in the coming years to align with the demands of Faisalabad’s rapidly expanding population.

Residents and environmental experts have welcomed the declaration, calling it a transformative step toward sustainable urban development in Punjab.
