In what promises to be one of the most transformative infrastructure developments for northern Pakistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has finally approved the construction of one of the most-awaited construction of twin tunnels through the Margalla Hills.

This ambitious project is expected to reduce travel time between Islamabad and Haripur to an astonishing 10 to 15 minutes.

From One Hour to Just Minutes

Currently, commuters often spend 45 minutes to over an hour navigating winding roads and traffic bottlenecks between the two cities. However, once the tunnels are complete, the distance will shrink to just eight kilometres, connecting Haripur directly to Islamabad’s D-12 sector.

For thousands of daily travelers, this could be life-changing — turning long, exhausting commutes into quick and convenient drives.

Seamless Connection to Hazara Motorway

The tunnels will link Hazara Motorway (M-15) with Islamabad, creating a smooth, uninterrupted travel corridor for residents, tourists, and commercial transport. Officials believe this will significantly improve regional connectivity, boost tourism in the Hazara region, and open up new opportunities for trade and investment.

Construction Timeline and Funding

The project has officially been added to the K-P Annual Development Programme 2025 and will be executed under a public-private partnership model. Construction is expected to begin in December 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by December 2028.

To kickstart the initiative, the KP government has earmarked Rs. 1 billion for the first year. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has also pledged support to ensure smooth coordination from Islamabad’s end.

Built to International Standards

The feasibility study has been completed by the authority. The planned tunnels are going to be fully illuminated, equipped with modern safety features, and constructed as per the international engineering standards, making certain both efficiency and safety for commuters.

A Dream Delayed but Not Forgotten

Officials from the Hazara Development Authority have spilled the beans that the project had remained dormant for nearly two decades due to funding constraints and shifting political priorities. This time, however, they insist the government is determined to see it through — even if federal support remains minimal.

A Game-Changer for the Region

Once completed, the tunnels are anticipated to

  • Reduce traffic congestion
  • Improve accessibility
  • Stimulate economic growth for both Islamabad and the Hazara region

For many residents, it’s more than just an infrastructure project — it’s the start of a new era of connectivity and convenience.
