In a significant development for urban water management, Faisalabad is set to receive its first-ever recharge well, marking a historic step toward tackling rainwater drainage issues and declining groundwater levels. The initiative is being led by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Faisalabad ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

The project will also include the construction of an underground water storage tank, making it a dual-purpose solution aimed at both flood prevention and groundwater recharge.

Recharge Well and Underground Tank Locations Identified

According to WASA officials, the recharge well will be constructed in the green belt along Susan Road in Madina Town, while the underground storage tank will be built near Faizan Madina Chowk, also within a green belt area. These locations have been carefully selected to ensure efficient rainwater collection and minimal disruption to traffic and daily life.

This is the first project of its kind in Faisalabad’s history, reflecting a shift toward modern and environmentally responsible urban planning.

How the Project Will Benefit Faisalabad

Managing Director WASA, Saqib Raza, explained that rainwater collected through the recharge well will directly seep into the ground, helping to restore the rapidly depleting groundwater table. At the same time, it will speed up rainwater drainage, reducing waterlogging on major roads during heavy rainfall.

The underground storage tank near Faizan Madina Chowk will temporarily store excess rainwater and release it gradually into the sewerage system, significantly reducing the risk of urban flooding during peak monsoon spells.

Officials Conduct Site Inspection

MD WASA Saqib Raza, along with senior officials, personally visited Susan Road in Madina Town to inspect the proposed sites. During the visit, instructions were issued to ensure timely completion and quality construction of both facilities.

The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) is also actively supporting the project and will carry out plantation of visually appealing plants along both green belts, enhancing the area’s aesthetic appeal.

Susan Road to Be Developed as a Model Road

With the addition of modern drainage infrastructure, groundwater recharge systems, and improved landscaping, Susan Road is expected to be developed as a model road for Faisalabad. Officials believe this project could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the city in the future.

This move not only addresses immediate monsoon-related challenges but also reflects Faisalabad’s growing focus on sustainable water management and climate-resilient infrastructure.
