In a promising move to tackle the city’s growing traffic congestion, the Punjab government is planning to construct two underpasses and a flyover in Rawalpindi as part of its development programme for the fiscal year 2025–26.

These kinds of latest infrastructure projects are anticipated to bring much-needed relief to

  • Daily commuters
  • Enhance traffic flow in some of the busiest parts of the city

The initiative follows recommendations from local lawmakers, including Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi (NA-56) and Danyal Chaudhry (NA-57), who have suggested the development in their respective constituencies. A senior official from the Housing and Urban Development Department has ensured that the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has already submitted these projects for inclusion in the upcoming Annual Development Programme.

What’s in the Pipeline?

The proposed plans include:

• An underpass at Chandani Chowk linking Rawal Road to Murree Road,

• An underpass at Marrir Chowk,

• And a 1-kilometre flyover from Siddique Chowk to IJP Road aimed at easing congestion on Saidpur Road.

Each project has been allocated Rs40 million for feasibility studies and detailed designs. The work is expected to begin after the ongoing development on The Mall and Adiala Road is completed.

These underpasses are expected to create a signal-free corridor, drastically reducing traffic snarls at key intersections like Chandani Chowk and Marrir Road. “Once completed, these projects will improve travel time, reduce the risk of accidents, and contribute to environmental betterment,” the official noted.

Systematic plan Toward Smarter Urban Planning

The planned flyover and underpasses intend to deliver alternate routes to avoid heavily congested intersections. These developments also signal the government’s broader intent to modernize Rawalpindi’s Road infrastructure, making the city more efficient and commuter-friendly.

RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza ratified that the authority is fully prepared to begin work once it receives the go-ahead from the provincial government. “We’re extremely dedicated to turning these plans into reality and supporting the city’s growth with smarter infrastructure,” she said.

For Rawalpindi’s citizens, these projects promise smoother journeys and a more livable city in the years ahead.
