Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to build a 192-kilometre railway line from Kohat district to Kharlachi in Kurram district, a key border trade point.
KP government is considering a major investment in railway infrastructure by introducing modern train services across key routes in the province. The major purpose behind the project is passenger connectivity, boosting trade, and reviving rail travel in regions that have not gone through major developmental phases for years.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on railway affairs chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi at the KP House in Islamabad. Senior officials briefed the chief minister on ongoing and proposed rail projects, with particular focus on the Kohat–Kharlachi railway link.
Kohat–Kharlachi Rail Project Details
As per briefing, the proposed Kohat–Kharlachi railway project involves the construction of a 192-kilometre rail line, with an estimated cost of $642 million. Authorities are expecting the project to be completed within two years after the full-scale work starts.
Officials confirmed that the feasibility study has already been completed, while land acquisition is currently underway. The project is being viewed as a long-term investment that is going to change transport and logistics in southern KP.

Safari Train Proposal Reviewed
In addition to the main rail project, the meeting also reviewed a proposal to operate a safari train on the 32-kilometre Jamrud–Landi Kotal railway track. The scenic route has tourism potential, and officials believe a safari train could attract local and foreign visitors.

The chief minister has given instructions to concerned departments to prepare detailed plans with clear timelines for all proposed railway initiatives, ensuring better coordination and timely execution.

Participants at the meeting agreed on the need to strengthen coordination between the KP government and Pakistan Railways. Sohail guaranteed full provincial support to Pakistan Railways for all the planning, management, and overall execution of railway projects in the province.
