Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally performed the groundbreaking of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, marking the city’s first-ever organized public transport network. The initiative, hailed as a historic milestone, aims to relieve congestion and improve commuting for thousands of residents.
A Public-Focused Development Vision
Speaking at the ceremony, the prime minister described the project as a gift to the people of Gujranwala, ensuring affordable and reliable transport for students, patients, labourers, lawyers, and the working class. He praised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for launching multiple mega development programmes across the province.
The PM highlighted that recent by-election results demonstrate public confidence in the government’s leadership and its development agenda.
Yellow Line Corridor Project Specifications and Route Details
The Gujranwala Mass Transit System’s Yellow Line Corridor is a Rs 62.7 billion project that was basically designed to be completed within one year. Running entirely on green energy, the corridor will serve at least 51,000 passengers daily.

Route Overview
The 31-kilometre route will connect:
• Aimenabad
• Gujranwala City (GT Road Belt)
• Gakhar Mandi
This alignment will serve dense residential and commercial pockets, significantly reducing travel time for commuters traveling across the district.
Bus Stations and Facilities at the yellow line corridor
The project will feature:
• 25 modern bus stations
• One underground station for high-demand zones
• 36 electric buses operating on the route
• Dedicated lanes and pedestrian-friendly access points
These provisions of these facilities are to offer a clean, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transit option compared to traditional local transport.

A Part of Punjab’s Transport Vision 2030
The mass transit system shows strong alignment with Punjab’s broader Transport Vision 2030, which makes the top priority of environmentally friendly mobility, road safety, and modern infrastructure. Other key initiatives highlighted by the prime minister include:
• Construction of a specialised cancer hospital
• Metro bus expansion
• Pollution control measures
• Housing for low-income families

• Upgrades in educational infrastructure
The ceremony was attended by various ministers such as federal ministers, provincial leaders, and a large public gathering, symbolized the beginning of a transformative era for Gujranwala. Once operational, the Yellow Line will dramatically ease mobility challenges, promote economic activity, and enhance the city’s modern identity.
