The Punjab government has revealed a new number plate policy specifically designed for electric vehicles (EVs). Under this initiative, green-colored number plates will now be required for all EVs, replacing the traditional plates used for conventional fuel-based vehicles.

As per the Additional Director General Ahmad Saeed, the green plates are intended to visibly distinguish electric vehicles on the roads, making it extremely easier for authorities and the public to recognize and encourage the adoption of cleaner transport options.

The new policy is considered to be an integral component of the government’s strategy to

  • Control air pollution
  • Cut back dependance on fossil fuels
  • Shift toward a greener, more sustainable transportation system.

“The purpose of these green number plates is not just aesthetic—it reflects our collective commitment to cleaner air and a healthier future,” Saeed stated.

Growing EV Adoption in Punjab

Punjab is experiencing steady growth in EV usage, with more than 16,000 electric vehicles registered so far. The breakdown of registered EVs includes:

• 14,500 electric motorcycles

• 1,461 electric cars

• 36 electric rickshaws

• 31 electric buses

This upward trend is strongly depicting a growing awareness among consumers of the environmental and economic benefits of EVs.

Financial Relief Continues for EV Owners

To further support the transition to electric mobility, the Punjab government is running its 95% discount on registration and token tax for EVs—an incentive that has already made a significant impact on purchase decisions.

“We understand that incentives play an integral role in accelerating EV adoption,” said Saeed. “This tax relief will be extended into the next financial year to guarantee that more of the masses will be able to afford to make the shift.”

A Greener Future on the Roads

The green number plates are a true reflection of progress, but besides this, the plates also highlight the strong dedication and commitment of the GOV towards sustainable practice. Punjab’s efforts are proving to be exemplary steps for other provinces so that they could be capable of taking a step towards cleaner, smarter urban mobility.
