With Pakistan set to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in 2027, the federal government has decided to establish a brand-new convention hall in the capital to accommodate high-level international delegations.

As per a press release from the Interior Ministry, the new facilities are going to be constructed adjacent to the existing Jinnah Convention Centre. The declaration follows a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who claimed that the project had received approval in line with the PM’s instructions.

A Modern, International-Standard Venue

Minister Naqvi kept on stressing that the new Convention Centre must meet global standards and modern requirements. The facility will feature a large convention hall along with several spacious conference and meeting rooms to host multi-nation events.

He directed authorities to bring on board leading local and international architects to develop the design, ensuring the structure reflects both functionality and Pakistan’s international aspirations.

Officials said the project would strengthen Pakistan’s ability to host large-scale summits and diplomatic events beyond the SCO meeting.

Interestingly, just a few years ago, the government had considered privatizing the Jinnah Convention Centre, which spans 7.59 acres with a 4.13-acre built-up area. However, officials later realised that the current facility is insufficient for major international gatherings, especially those involving multiple heads of state and delegations. This prompted the shift in strategy toward expansion rather than divestment.

Updates on Other Capital Projects

The meeting was held at the CDA Headquarters and spanning three hours, and it was also attended by State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Interior Secretary Mohammad Khurram Agha, and senior officials from the CDA and district administration.

Several ongoing infrastructure and administrative projects were analyzed:

• The construction of six new police stations was given a 45-day deadline.

• A plan was requested for the commercialization of the Islamabad Expressway.

• Tenders for 10 additional police stations have already been issued.

• The new block at Parliament Lodges is on track for completion within its deadline.

• All piles of the T-Chowk Flyover Project have been completed.

• The foundation stone for Shaheen Chowk will be laid soon.

• Restoration work on the Pak Secretariat’s R-Block building is nearing completion.

With preparations now underway, the government is ready to present a modern and capable Islamabad to international partners at the SCO Summit going to occur in 2027.
