China is moving forward with one of the most ambitious renewable energy projects ever attempted a space-based solar power station that spans 1 kilometer in width and will orbit at approximately 36,000 kilometers above Earth. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to harness solar energy from space, where it can be captured without the interruptions of cloud cover, nighttime, or adverse weather.

Ambition on a Grand Scale:

Compared by some engineers to moving the massive Three Gorges Dam into orbit, this solar power station represents a giant leap in our approach to clean energy. The idea is to use specialised microwave signals to send the electricity back to Earth after the solar panels have collected the sunlight. As long as the technological obstacles to accurate and secure microwave energy conversion are overcome, this energy transmission technique could be extremely impactful.

Experts estimate that the energy conversion efficiency of this space-based system could be up to 10 times higher than conventional solar panels.
