Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided that the federal government will stand firmly with families devastated by the recent floods, promising faster rehabilitation and a closer look at the root causes of the destruction.

In the federal cabinet meeting that was held recently, Shehbaz expressed his grief over the loss of lives caused by cloud bursts, massive rainfall, and floods, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Districts such as Swat, Swabi, Mansehra and Shangla has been hit the hardest, with heart-wrenching stories emerging from these regions.

A Grim Reality

The Prime Minister reminded the 2022 floods, when nearly 100 people lost their lives. 400 deaths reported in the province of KP alone. “Every life lost is a national tragedy,” he remarked, and emphasized that the top priority of the government is to protect and assist those left behind.

Sharif stated that federal ministers, NDMA officials, and the armed forces are working round the clock in the flood-prone areas to provide its services. He also visited Buner and nearby districts himself to encounter affected families, listen to their concerns, and monitor relief efforts.

“We cannot undo the pain these families are encountering with, but we can stand with them, rebuild their homes, and make sure help reaches them on time,” he assured.

Tackling Human Negligence

The Prime Minister did not feel any hesitation from addressing man-made factors behind the recurring disasters. He pointed to illegal constructions along waterways that were the main reason for blocking natural river flow and worsening flooding. He said that this must be stopped.

Moreover, he declared that he would soon call a meeting to nip the evil in the bud. He also raised alarm over the excessive deforestation in the region of Galyat and other areas, by giving warning that deforestation is the evil that makes the communities more vulnerable.

Strengthening Ties Abroad

On foreign relations, Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, calling it proof of Pakistan and China’s growing friendship. He also ratified that he would travel to China soon for the SCO Summit to meet with the Chinese leadership.

The meeting ended with prayers for those who lost their lives, and a renewed call for unity in assisting families to recover from the devastation.
