In a landmark step toward inclusivity and accessibility, the Sindh government is launching a groundbreaking initiative to distribute sensor-equipped navigation sticks for the visually impaired — completely free of cost.
The high-tech assistive device, locally developed by NED University’s Biomedical Engineering Department, is designed to help individuals with visual impairments move more safely and independently in their surroundings.
According to Tauha Ahmed Farooqi, Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, the pilot phase of the project will start later this month. In its first stage, the government plans to distribute the scanner sticks among registered individuals across the province.
Farooqi highlighted that Sindh is considered to be the home to more than six million people living with physical or mental disabilities, including those with autism — a group that often lacks access to quality assistive tools.
The project is considered to be a joint collaboration between the Sindh government and NED University, marking a major milestone in the ongoing efforts of the province to support persons with disabilities via technology-driven solutions.
