Karachi’s public transport system is about to get a most-awaited boost. The second phase of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is ready to commence in the second week of August, promising better connectivity and more convenience for daily commuters.

From Surjani Town to Saddar: Expanding the Reach

The first section of the Green Line BRT, running from Surjani Town to Numaish, was completed back in 2021. For four years, Karachiites have been waiting for its extension into the city’s bustling commercial heart. Now, that wait is nearly over.

This new phase will add a 1.8 kilometer stretch, extending the route from Capri Cinema to Municipal Park in Saddar. Along this short but crucial stretch, three new bus stations will be constructed. To ensure smoother traffic flow, two dedicated traffic signals will also be installed.

A Key Corridor for Daily Commuters

The Saddar extension is anticipated to serve thousands of passengers who travel to the city center every day for

For most of the residents, this expansion will cut down the hassle of long commutes, reduce dependency on private transport, and provide a cleaner, more reliable solution to minibuses and rickshaws.

An official from the project said that tenders for this phase have already been awarded. With an additional Rs 5 billion allocated, the total cost of the Green Line BRT has now reached Rs 30 billion.

Big Investment for Karachi’s Future

Initially, the Federal Government had designated Rs 42.7 billion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025-26 for the Green Line. Authorities keep on saying that this expansion is part of a broader plan to integrate Karachi’s transport network and linking the Green Line with other BRT lines in the future.

Expected Benefits

Urban planners believe the completed Green Line system is expected to bring significant changes to Karachi. It is projected to reduce travel times, ease traffic congestion and help lower carbon emissions by encouraging masses to shift from private vehicles to mass transit.

For millions of Karachi residents, the upcoming Saddar extension represents not just new bus stations, but a step towards a more organized, accessible, and sustainable transport system.
