In a significant step toward improving connectivity in Pakistan’s northern areas, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has approved more than Rs 22 billion for two transformative roads in the Chitral region.

These developments guarantee better mobility, greater economic activity, and improved access to essential services for thousands of residents.

Two Strategic Roads Receive Green Light

As per official documents, the NHA has sanctioned the construction of:

• 153 km Chitral–Booni–Mastuj–Shandur (CBMS) Road

• 46 km Chitral–Ayun–Bumburate (CAB) Road

Together, the total approved roads amounts to Rs 22.44 billion, marking one of the largest recent infrastructure commitments for Upper Chitral and surrounding valleys.

CBMS Road: A Lifeline Through the High Valleys

The CBMS Road, estimated at Rs 17.78 billion, will be built as a modern two-lane corridor with a 100-meter right of way. The project is divided into four segments stretching from Chitral toward Shandur.

Physical construction is already underway.

Once completed, this critical route is about to form a direct connection between N-45 and N-35, giving the region an alternative link during harsh winters when snowfall often blocks existing roads. For many communities, this will be the difference between isolation and consistent year-round access.

CAB Road: Boosting Tourism and Local Connectivity

The Chitral–Ayun–Bumburate (CAB) Road, costing Rs 4.65 billion, has also entered its construction phase. This road will greatly improve access to:

• Ayun Valley

• The world-famous Kalash Valleys

These areas attract both domestic and international tourists, and improved road conditions are expected to encourage higher visitor numbers. Residents, too, will benefit from smoother travel for work, education, and essential errands.

Economic and Social Benefits for 350,000+ Residents

Officials highlight that the improved routes will drastically reduce travel times and ease congestion on existing roads. But the benefits go far beyond convenience.

The upgraded infrastructure is going to support:

• Trade of agricultural goods, including fruit and livestock

• Transport of gemstones and handicrafts, key income sources for locals

• Tourism growth, which will create jobs and expand hospitality services

Additionally, easier access to schools, hospitals, and government offices will improve the quality of life for more than 350,000 residents across Chitral, Booni, Mastuj, Ayun, and Kalash valleys.

A Step Toward Inclusive Regional Development

By investing in these road projects, the NHA is meant to unlock long-term economic potential while strengthening social connectivity in some of Pakistan’s most scenic yet underserved regions.

The projects is a true reflection of a strong commitment to bringing remote northern communities closer to the national economic mainstream.
