Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry has reached a major milestone, with exports climbing to $457 million in the last fiscal year — the highest figure in over two decades. The announcement came from Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was speaking at the 8th Pharma Summit in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Gilani described the achievement as a matter of national pride, noting that pharmaceutical exports grew by 34% — a remarkable jump that reflects the resilience and potential of the sector. He pointed out that Pakistan now produces the vast majority of its own medicines, reducing dependence on imports.

He credited the success to early adoption of artificial intelligence, digital health platforms, and advanced manufacturing technologies, alongside policy support like cutting duties on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and launching initiatives such as PharmEx Pakistan.

Building a Bigger Global Role

Calling for a forward-looking approach, Gilani kept on urging the industry to link

He argued that with determination, Pakistan could claim a much larger share of the trillion-dollar global pharmaceutical market.

Challenges at Home

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal echoed the optimism but also reminded participants of the challenges encountered by Pakistan’s health system. He noted that the burden on hospitals is highly overwhelming, driven by population growth and rising healthcare needs.

“There is a dire need for more small hospitals and dispensaries,” he said, stressing that reforms must not only boost exports but also ease pressure on the domestic health system.

Zeal and zest of Government

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, praised pharmaceutical exporters as “Pakistan’s ambassadors” abroad. He highlighted the sector’s central role in both economic growth and ensuring access to affordable medicines for 250 million masses of Pakistan.

“The government stands firmly with the pharmaceutical industry,” he assured, guaranteeing continued reforms and supportive policies.

The summit concluded with the Pharma Export Awards, where the top 50 exporters of the country were honored for their contribution. For many in attendance, the event was not just about figures but about recognizing the increasing strength of the pharma industry of Pakistan on the global stage.
