OGDCL’s third major discovery at the Baragzai site in Kohat has added 9,500 barrels of oil per day, which is about 14.5% of Pakistan’s total crude oil production.

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) has announced a major oil and gas discovery at its Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well in the Nashpa Block, located in Kohat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. This discovery highlights the growing importance of the area for Pakistan’s energy security.

The well was drilled to a depth of 5,170 metres and successfully tested the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations, two productive geological layers. It is currently producing:

  • 3,100 barrels of oil per day
  • 8.15 million standard cubic feet of gas per day

The well flowed through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead pressure of 3,010 pounds per square inch gauge, confirming that the discovery is commercially viable.

This latest find is OGDC’s third discovery in the same region in just one month. Combined, the three wells are producing 9,480 barrels of oil per day, which accounts for about 14.5% of Pakistan’s current domestic crude oil production.

PPL and OGDCL Strike Major Reserves in Kohat District

Last week, PPL discovered gas from exploratory well Bilitang-1 in TAL Block becoming one of the major oil and gas discovery in Pakistan this year 2026. It is strengthening Pakistan’s domestic energy prospects and boosting confidence in further exploration within the region. T

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced the discovery on January 19, 2026. It confirmed that gas flows from the Lockhart Formation in the TAL Block, located in district Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The exploratory well Bilitang-1 was spudded on August 10, 2025, and successfully drilled to a depth of 4,011 meters True Vertical Depth (TVD). As per the company, detailed analysis of Logging While Drilling (LWD) and wireline log data confirmed the presence of commercially viable gas reserves.

Production Results and Technical Details

As part of testing operations, the Lockhart Formation flowed gas at a rate of 1.37 Million Standard Cubic Feet Per Day (MMSCFD) using a 32/64-inch choke. The test was conducted against a Wellhead Flowing Pressure (WHFP) of 254 Psi, indicating stable reservoir performance.

These encouraging results highlight the technical success of the well and validate the geological potential of the TAL Block.

Joint Venture and Strategic Importance

The TAL Joint Venture includes MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co. B.V. as operator with a 10% working interest, OGDCL and PPL holding 30% each, Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) with 25%, and Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) with 5%.

According to PPL, the discovery has de-risked future exploration plays in the TAL Block and created new upside opportunities. This is paving the way for additional drilling and investment.

Impact of Oil and Gas Discovery on Pakistan’s Energy Outlook

As PPL discovers gas from exploratory well Bilitang-1 in TAL Block, the find supports Pakistan’s efforts to minimize over reliance on imported energy, improve supply security, and strengthen the upstream oil and gas sector. If further developed, the discovery could contribute meaningfully to meeting growing domestic gas demand while encouraging continued exploration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

OGDCL’s Major Oil and Gas Discovery in KP’s Kohat District

OGDCL announced major oil, gas discovery in KP’s Kohat district, marking a major boost for Pakistan’s domestic energy resources. Oil and Gas Development Company Limited confirmed successful production from the Baragzai X-1 exploratory well in the Nashpa Block, located in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As per organization, the well is currently producing 4,100 barrels of oil per day along with 10.5 million cubic feet of gas per day, highlighting the commercial strength of the discovery. The well was drilled to a depth of 5,170 metres, where a 187-metre hydrocarbon-bearing zone was identified in the Datta Formation.

Strong Production Results and Strategic Value

Testing results recorded production at a 32/64-inch choke with a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,880 psi, confirming the well’s strong reservoir performance. OGDCL operates the Nashpa Block with a 65% working interest, while PPL holds 30% and GHPL 5%.

The company stated that the discovery is going to

  1. Strengthen national energy reserves
  2. Improve the supply-demand balance
  3. Help minimize reliance on expensive oil and gas imports

Officials also noted that an earlier discovery in the same block had already de-risked deeper exploration, opening the door for further finds in the region.

As OGDCL announces major oil, gas discovery in KP’s Kohat district, the development reinforces confidence in Pakistan’s upstream sector and supports long-term energy security via locally produced resources.
