A major milestone in Pakistan’s infrast ructure development is on the horizon — the long-awaited Sukkur–Hyderabad–Karachi Motorway Project is finally moving toward construction, with work anticipated to start in the first quarter of 2026. The motorway will connect Karachi Port to Sukkur, giving an essential connection between the nation’s north and south.
As per the officials, financing for three key sections of the project has already been secured, while discussions with international financial institutions to fund the remaining two sections are in their final stages. The update was shared during a recent meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Communications, chaired by Senator Quratulain Marri.
Sukkur–Hyderabad–Karachi Motorway: A Step Forward for Connectivity and Growth
During the committee meeting, representatives from the National Highway Authority (NHA) briefed members on the project’s latest progress. They ratified that the revised PC-1 (Project Concept Paper) has been officially approved, marking a major procedural advancement.
Officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Public-Private Partnership Authority (P3A) stated that negotiations with the Saudi Fund for Development and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) are progressing well to finalize the project’s overall financing plan. Once these arrangements are complete, groundwork on-site will start in early 2026.
This motorway would end up being an achievement in the nation’s development, particularly in the transportation of commercial goods and it has been estimated that in the next 25 years, this motorway will give the government Rs 3,000 billion as a benefit.

The Sukkur–Hyderabad–Karachi Motorway is going to play a transformative role in connecting Sindh’s major cities, improving logistics, and enhancing trade through faster and safer transport routes.
It is also going to create job opportunities, direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase, and stimulate local economies once operational.
Committee Calls for Speed and Accountability
While acknowledging the steady progress, the Senate committee kept on urging all concerned departments to accelerate implementation and remove procedural bottlenecks to avoid further delays. Lawmakers emphasized that timely completion of national infrastructure projects like this motorway is extremely important for Pakistan’s economic recovery and regional development.
The meeting also analyzed the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) 2025–26, focusing on the first-quarter authorization and release of development funds. Officials from the Planning Division and Finance Division have revealed that approximately Rs 330 billion had been authorized by the second quarter. However, the committee expressed concern that actual spending is significantly below target.
Senators kept on giving warnings that such slow utilization of funds could prove to be a hindrance in the timely completion of strategic projects, including the motorway. Both the Planning and Finance Divisions were therefore given instructions to strengthen coordination with relevant ministries to ensure faster fund disbursement and utilization before the end of the fiscal year.
Looking Ahead
As Pakistan continues to invest in large-scale infrastructure, the Sukkur–Hyderabad–Karachi Motorway stands out as a project of great national importance. After the completion, it will
- Reduce travel time between Sindh’s major cities
- Enhance trade efficiency, improve road safety
- Support economic integration across the region
If all goes well as per the plan, construction will officially kick off by NHA in early 2026, marking a major step toward a more connected and developed Pakistan.
