Islamabad’s infrastructure upgrade is picking up pace as the Rs 1.3 billion Shaheen Chowk Underpass project records major construction progress, and it is guaranteeing smoother and faster traffic flow in the capital in the near future.

During a recent visit to the construction site, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa rescrutinized the ongoing work and expressed satisfaction over the pace and quality of development. He was accompanied by Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza and other senior CDA officials.

Key Construction Milestones Achieved

As per the project engineers, the Shaheen Chowk Underpass has entered an advanced stage of development:

• Around 80 percent of the barrel wall work has been completed.

• Ramp One walls have reached nearly 60% completion.

• The barrel girder work is fully completed, marking a major structural milestone.

• Earthwork, road base preparation, and Ramp Two wall construction are currently underway with teams working in multiple shifts.

This round-the-clock construction activity indicates the emphasis and commitment of the government on timely completion of the underpass to minimize daily traffic blockage on this important route.

Focus on Quality, Safety, and Urban Aesthetics

During the visit, Chairman Randhawa directed the engineering teams to strictly follow high construction standards, ensuring durability and long-term performance of the road infrastructure.

He also emphasized that the Shaheen Chowk Underpass should not only be functional but also visually appealing.

For this purpose, he instructed the concerned departments to:

• Add modern landscaping around the underpass

• Install digital information boards for guidance and updates

• Ensure energy-efficient LED lighting for better visibility and safety at night

This reflects a broader vision of transforming Islamabad’s key junctions into safe, smart, and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces.

How the Shaheen Chowk Underpass Will Benefit Commuters

Once completed, the Shaheen Chowk Underpass in Islamabad is expected to:

• Provide signal-free movement for thousands of vehicles daily

• Reduce travel time for office-goers, students, and residents using this corridor

• Help decongest nearby intersections by diverting through-traffic underground

• Improve road safety by reducing bottlenecks and chaotic traffic stops

The project will particularly prove to be beneficial to those commuting between residential sectors, educational institutions, and the major commercial areas of the capital.

Continuous Monitoring to Meet Deadlines

Chairman Randhawa has given the relevant instructions to the Project Director and Resident Engineers to maintain strict on-site monitoring of each stage of construction. Regular reviews and technical inspections are being carried out to:

• Keep the project on schedule

• Ensure full compliance with design and safety standards

• Quickly resolve any technical or logistical challenges

The Shaheen Chowk Underpass is considered to be part of a broader strategy to give a modern touch to Islamabad’s road network and improve urban mobility. As progress continues at a steady pace, residents can look forward to a safer, faster, and more efficient travel experience on this important route.
