The federal government has given the green light to an ambitious high-speed rail service linking Islamabad and Rawalpindi, a long-awaited project expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and offer a modern transport alternative for residents of the twin cities.

A high-level meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters was chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi, finalized the project’s first phase. Senior officials from Pakistan Railways, the CDA, Rawalpindi Commissioner’s Office, and law enforcement agencies also attended.

A 20-Minute Journey

The rail link will connect Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad to Saddar Station in Rawalpindi, cutting the journey down to just 20 minutes. The first trains are expected to begin operating on March 23, 2026, with the initial phase utilizing existing tracks. In the next stage, the service will expand further into the capital.

To support the rail link, CDA’s new fleet of electric buses and the existing Metro Bus service will act as feeders, making access to Margalla Station seamless. The CDA will manage day-to-day operations, while Pakistan Railways will maintain the tracks and core infrastructure.

Modern Trains on the Horizon

Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed that the project would use modern Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), likely to be imported from China or other partner countries. “This is a milestone in public welfare, enabling swift and convenient travel for residents of both cities,” he said.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi added that the initiative reflected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for people-centric infrastructure.

“Thousands of citizens are going to get advantages from safe, affordable and efficient travel once this project is complete,” he remarked.

Inclusive Reforms in Railways

Besides the project, Pakistan Railways is busy making reforms to make the system highly inclusive. Special measures are about to guarantee safer, more dignified travel, especially women, with awareness campaigns, gender-sensitization training for staff, and designated facilities.

Persons with special abilities will also see improvements, with reserved seating and wheelchairs provided at major stations.

“These initiatives are depicting our dedication, zeal and zest for establishing a modern, inclusive, and passenger-friendly railway,” Minister Abbasi said.

For many commuters, this project marks not just improved connectivity, but a step toward a more people-centered, inclusive future for the transport system of Pakistan.
