In a landmark decision that promises to reshape the future of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan has announced plans to build a new international airport in Mirpur.

The ambitious project intends to bring world-class air travel facilities to the people of the region, particularly benefitting the large diaspora community from AJK living in the United Kingdom, the Middle East, and other parts of the world.

Feasibility and Site Selection Underway

As per officials, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has already initiated the technical feasibility process for the airport. This includes the identification of a suitable site, along with environmental, geographical, and logistical assessments to make certain the most strategic location is chosen.

A PAA spokesperson confirmed that the initial groundwork is in progress. “The Pakistan Airports Authority has started the process of technical feasibility, including site identification and technical assessments, which are anticipated to be completed by December 2025,” the spokesperson said.

Once these studies and designs receive approval, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mirpur International Airport will be formally announced. Construction will then start, marking the beginning of a historic milestone for AJK.

A Gateway for the AJK Diaspora

Mirpur, often referred to as “Little England” due to its large overseas population in the UK, has long awaited modern air connectivity. The new airport will make international travel far more accessible for families in the region, who currently rely on distant airports in Islamabad or Lahore for travel.

Officials keep on believing the project will enhance regional connectivity, making travel process easier not just for residents but also for international visitors, investors, and tourists.

Economic Growth and Development

Beyond convenience, the airport is anticipated to become a catalyst for economic activity in Azad Kashmir. It will create hundreds of local jobs, promote trade, tourism and attract foreign investment to the region.

The Pakistan Airports Authority has reiterated its dedication to ensuring transparency, quality, and timely completion of all technical and design phases. With the project’s completion targeted within the next few years, the Mirpur International Airport is set to open a new chapter in economic and infrastructural development of AJK, connecting its people more closely with the world.
