Good news for the masses across Punjab — the provincial government has rolled out free Wi-Fi at more than 1,400 locations, making internet access easier for everyone from students to shopkeepers to daily commuters.

The idea behind the project is pretty simple: in today’s world, staying connected is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Whether it’s students searching for notes, workers contacting family, or someone needing quick access to emergency services, internet availability can make a huge difference.

Lahore at the Center

Lahore has seen the biggest boost, with free Wi-Fi available at 442 points around the city. According to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, more than 58 million users have already tapped into the service, using over 1,191 terabytes of data. From bus stations to busy intersections, the hotspots are helping people stay connected on the move.

The service isn’t limited to Lahore. It has spread to 23 districts across Punjab, covering 952 locations like markets, hospitals, and public spaces. One of the most important additions is in 450 government colleges for women.

Officials say the step is meant to support education, make resources easier to access, and improve safety by ensuring female students can quickly reach help if needed.

Faster and More Reliable

To keep up with demand, the system has been upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 technology, which means faster speeds and smoother connections even in crowded areas. Lahore alone has seen its hotspots almost double within a few months, showing how quickly the program is expanding.

Authorities have made it clear that the free Wi-Fi is mainly for education, communication, and accessing services, not for endless video streaming or entertainment. Filters and usage controls are in place to make sure the network is used responsibly.

Towards a Digital Punjab

For citizens, this initiative is more than just free internet — it’s about bridging the digital gap. A student can now be able to download notes without thinking about mobile data, a commuter can check routes in real-time, and families can stay connected without paying the extra costs. Step by step, Punjab is turning into a digital province.
