UK, Korean, Kazakh universities express interest in establishing campuses in Punjab

Punjab is on the verge of a transformative shift in higher education, as top international universities keep on expressing strong interest in setting up campuses in the province.

This development came on the surface during a high-level meeting which is chaired by CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where a huge-ranging set of reforms and initiatives were discussed to uplift the quality and governance of public universities and colleges in Punjab. 

During the session, officials from the Higher Education Department has showcased a detailed briefing, depicting current challenges and opportunities in the sector. 

The government declared that three major institutions, such as 

  • Government College University 
  • Government College for Women University 
  • University of Engineering and Technology

They will be upgraded into model campuses. These will definitely serve as examples of academic excellence for others to follow. 

UK, Korean, Kazakh universities to ‘establish campuses’ in Punjab

The meeting also unveiled that renowned international universities from the UK, South Korea, and Kazakhstan, specifically including the University of London, Brunel University, University of Gloucestershire, and University of Leicester—are highly interested in establishing their campuses in Punjab.

Welcoming the move, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized how this would assist in boosting the province’s global academic standing and create new avenues for local students to get world-class education without leaving the country.

Several key reforms were also ratified: 

• College Management Councils will be formed in all public colleges to improve day-to-day management and accountability. 

• A KPI-based evaluation system will now assess university faculty performance and help measure the effectiveness of Vice Chancellors. 

• The Chief Minister demanded a full report on underperforming colleges, ensuring no institution is left behind in the drive for quality. 

• A special Education Vigilance Squad will be launched to conduct surprise inspections, which will be focusing on teaching standards 

  • Student attendance 
  • Discipline 
  • Hygiene

Updates on the CM Punjab Talented Scholarship and Laptop Scheme displayed overwhelming interest, with over 19,000 applications received. Maryam Nawaz has given the relevant briefings for further improvements to ensure fair access and transparency. 

Higher education strategic plan to bring research innovation

It discussed about the Higher Education Strategic Plan (2025–2029), with a strong emphasis to be on  

  • Digital tools 
  • Research innovation 
  • knowledge-sharing

The idea of providing greater autonomy to public universities for the sake of improving good governance was highly appreciated. 

Approval was also granted to organize the first-ever Punjab Higher Education Conference, to bring together experts, educators, and policymakers. 

These initiatives are depicting a bold new chapter for Punjab’s educational future—that future which is going to be inclusive, forward-thinking, and globally connected.
