In a remarkable achievement for Pakistan’s agricultural sector, the world-famous Miyazaki mango, known for its exotic purple hue and luxurious price tag, is now being cultivated in Malir, Karachi. This breakthrough brings not only pride to the local farming community but also potential economic opportunities for the country.

A Slice of Japan in Pakistan

The Miyazaki mango originates from Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan, where it is prized for its

  • Deep purple-red skin
  • Pulp without having fiber in it
  • Rich fragrance
  • Intensely sweet, creamy flavor. Internationally dubbed the “Egg of Sunshine” and sometimes referred to as the “Dinosaur’s Egg” due to its size and color, this mango is truly one of a kind. In global markets, it fetches an astonishing $800 to $900 per kilogram, which translates to Rs 250,000 to Rs 300,000 in Pakistan.

One Farmer’s Vision: Ghulam Hashim Noorani

The credit for bringing this premium fruit to Pakistan must be dedicated to Ghulam Hashim Noorani, a dedicated farmer from Memon Goth, Malir.

His journey started six years ago, when he decided to make an import of a single Miyazaki mango sapling from Japan. With relentless effort, care, and a deep understanding of Karachi’s subtropical climate, Noorani successfully adapted the plant to local conditions.

“It was a gamble,” said Noorani in an interview. “But I believed that if the soil and care were right, even the world’s finest mango could grow here. And it did.”

Now, his orchard is bearing fruit—quite literally—with stunning, aromatic purple mangoes that have drawn attention from across the country.

Luxury Meets Local Farming

Currently, Noorani’s Miyazaki mangoes are being sold in limited quantities, with some priced as high as Rs300,000 per kilogram. While these are not for everyday consumption, their presence in Pakistan marks a major milestone—proving that premium agricultural innovation is possible locally.

Consumers and food enthusiasts who have had the rare chance to sample this mango describe it as “melt-in-your-mouth delicious,” with a flavor profile unlike anything available in South Asia.

Opportunities for Growth and Export

The successful cultivation of Miyazaki mangoes in Pakistan is more than a novelty. It opens doors for export potential, agricultural diversification, and higher earnings for farmers.

If more local growers follow suit with the right resources and techniques, Pakistan could soon be exporting these kinds of luxurious fruits to global markets, much like it does with its most famous specifically Chaunsa and Sindhri mangoes.

The remarkable development depicts what can be achieved when innovation, dedication, and vision come together in farming—providing hope for a more diverse and prosperous agricultural future in Pakistan.
