Eco-friendly electric rickshaws to be introduced in Peshawar

Peshawar is finally moving towards a cleaner, greener future! The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has started serious discussions about introducing eco-friendly electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in the city — and it could completely transform how people travel every day.

A special project steering committee meeting was held at the Planning and Development Department few days ago, chaired by Adeel Shah, Secretary of P&D.

The purpose of the meeting was simple — to keep a check and analyze the progress made so far and to chalk out the next steps for implementing the e-rickshaw project in Peshawar.

Officials from the Transport Department, Environment Department, and several other government bodies attended, showing that this project is being taken very seriously and handled in a coordinated way.

Clean, Affordable, and Modern Transport for Citizens

The main idea behind this initiative is to give the people of Peshawar a clean, affordable, and modern mode of transportation. These electric rickshaws don’t use petrol or diesel — they run entirely on electricity, producing zero emissions.

That means less noise, less smoke, and a big cut in air pollution across the city.

For rickshaw drivers, e-rickshaws also mean lower running costs — no need to worry about expensive fuel prices. It’s a win-win situation for both drivers and passengers.

Key Discussions and Project Goals of the e-rickshaw plan in Peshawar

During the meeting, the committee members discussed several key points —

• Setting up charging stations at accessible locations.

• Deciding how to fund and subsidize the vehicles.

• Ensuring safety standards and battery maintenance systems.

• Planning for driver training to make certain the transition goes smoothly.

Officials also talked about running a pilot project — a smaller test phase — to observe how e-rickshaws perform under real Peshawar conditions before scaling it up across the province.

Introduction of e-Rickshaw: A Vision for a Greener, Smarter Peshawar

While wrapping up the meeting, Secretary Adeel Shah kept on emphasizing that this project reflects the government’s vision for a “cleaner, greener, and smarter Peshawar.”

If executed successfully, this plan could create an example for other cities in Pakistan, depicting how innovation and sustainability can go hand-in-hand.

Imagine a city where silent, smoke-free e-rickshaws glide through Saddar, Hayatabad, and University Road — that’s not just development, that’s hope on wheels for the masses of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
