To revive local tourism and make Punjab’s historical treasures more accessible, the provincial government has launched a weekend double-decker bus service from Lahore to Sheikhupura.
The initiative, overseen by the Punjab Tourism and Archaeology Department, is designed to offer families, student, and travel enthusiasts an easy and affordable way to explore nearby heritage sites.
Affordable Day Trips for Families and Tourists
The service operates only on Saturdays and Sundays, making it the best for weekend plans. The round-trip fare is set at Rs 1,200 per person, which includes transport to and from Lahore and guided access to key attractions.
Officials keep on saying the fare was deliberately kept budget-friendly to motivate middle-class families and youth groups to participate.
First Tour Receives Enthusiastic Response
During the inaugural run, passengers visited two major landmarks:
• Shrine of Waris Shah, the celebrated Punjabi poet known worldwide for “Heer Ranjha.”
• Hiran Minar, a Mughal-era monument built during Emperor Jahangir’s reign.
At Hiran Minar, visitors took part in cycling and boating activities arranged specifically for the tour. To add a cultural touch, a live recitation of Heer was performed, drawing praise from the tourists who enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere.

Local Community Welcomes the Initiative
Shopkeepers, local guides, and small businesses in Sheikhupura expressed optimism about the new service. Many believe it will draw more foot traffic to the city, benefiting restaurants, souvenir shops, and local artisans. Residents said the initiative could reshape the perception of Sheikhupura—from a quiet district to a lively cultural destination.
Deputy Commissioner Shahid Imran Marth said this step is assumed to be the integral component of a broader plan to establish Sheikhupura as a regional tourism hub. He noted that the district has long been overlooked despite its rich Mughal history and poetic legacy.
Additional Secretary Tourism Sadaf Zafar emphasized that the goal is not just tourism but sustainable development. By increasing visitors, the program keep on hoping to support local jobs, preserve heritage sites and encourage investment in hospitality and recreation.
A Step Toward Cultural Revival
Authorities keep on saying that more routes could be added in the future if the response remains positive. Plans are also underway to add
- Historical storytelling
- Traditional music performances
- Handicraft exhibitions on upcoming tours
For now, the double-decker bus has already sparked renewed interest among Lahoris looking for relaxing weekend trips close to home. With structured tours, affordable pricing, and cultural activities, the service is being glanced as a fresh way to celebrate Punjab’s history while supporting local communities.
