In a major move toward sustainable urban management, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the launch of a large-scale Smart Water Metering Project aimed at transforming Islamabad’s aging water supply network through digital monitoring and efficient management.

The project was approved during a meeting of the Islamabad Water Agency, chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, where officials reviewed strategies to improve the city’s water conservation and service delivery.

The session brought together senior CDA officials, including Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, DG Islamabad Water, DG Planning and Development, and representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Pakistan Telecommunications Infrastructure Authority (PTIA).

Modernizing Water Management

Under the new plan, the CDA will install smart meters across Islamabad to accurately measure consumption, prevent wastage, and make sure transparent billing. These meters will help authorities monitor water usage in real time, detect leakages, and identify areas with excessive consumption — marking a massive shift from the city’s outdated manual monitoring system.

“The Water Metering Project marks a major milestone for Islamabad,” said Chairman Randhawa. “It will bring accountability, improve conservation, and ensure that every drop of water is used wisely.”

Focus on Sustainability

Officials kept on discussing upon complementary initiatives such as converting tube wells and pumping systems to solar power, upgrading old pipelines and introducing energy-efficient water pumps.

However, Randhawa stressed that the immediate priority would be the successful rollout of the metering system, which will lay the foundation for a smarter and more sustainable water network.

“Water is one of our most precious resources,” he noted. “With growing urban demand, we must use technology to protect it. Every drop counts.”

A Step Toward a Smarter Islamabad

Once the project is implemented, the project is expected to significantly

  • Minimize water losses
  • Curb misuse
  • Improve service reliability

The CDA hopes to align Islamabad’s infrastructure with modern global standards by embracing smart technology— creating a cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally responsible capital city.
