In a heartening move to strengthen ties with Pakistan, Bangladesh has announced 500 fully-funded scholarships for bright Pakistani students. The initiative is being seen not only as an investment in education but also as a step toward building stronger people-to-people links between the two countries.
The declaration was made in Lahore during a meeting between Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Dr. Khalid Hussain. Also present were PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E. MD Iqbal Hussain Khan.
Education as a Bridge of Friendship
Maryam Nawaz warmly welcomed the scholarships, calling them an opportunity for Pakistani youth to expand their horizons.
She admired achievements of Bangladesh in the following sectors that have changed its economy and social landscape.
- Garment industry
- Microfinance
- Women’s empowerment
She said Punjab was highly eager to work with Bangladesh in areas such as renewable energy, agriculture and flood management, adding that cooperation could assist both countries in tackling shared challenges.
Remembering Shared History
Nawaz Sharif struck a nostalgic note, recalling the historic bond between Pakistan and Bangladesh. He mentioned national hero MM Alam with pride and admired Bangladesh’s success in lifting its economy and improving the lives of its citizens.

His message was extremely simple: both nations share more than just history — they also share aspirations for progress and prosperity.
Renewed Commitments
For his part, Dr. Khalid Hussain has shown admiration for the Nawaz family’s role in politics and expressed Bangladesh’s keenness to deepen ties with Pakistan.
High Commissioner MD Iqbal Hussain Khan went a step further, praising Nawaz Sharif’s role in Pakistan’s nuclear program and acknowledging Maryam Nawaz’s welfare initiatives. He also pointed out that younger generation of Bangladesh continues to admire Pakistani leadership.
Why It Is Important
For many Pakistani students, these scholarships will open doors that were previously out of reach. Access to quality higher education abroad helps in changing the quality of life also. It is the way towards more opportunities not just for individual growth but also for stronger cultural and academic exchange.
In the long run, initiatives like these can assist in easing political strains by permitting the younger generation of both nations to see each other as partners in progress rather than rivals of the past.
