In a significant advancement for Pakistan’s higher education, Arizona State University (ASU) plans to launch its inaugural physical campus in the nation with the creation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Lahore.

This signifies a significant milestone, as it will be the inaugural occasion for a leading U.S. university to set up a direct presence in Pakistan.

Set to accept its inaugural group of students in Fall 2025, NIT will first accommodate two main departments: the School of Management Sciences and the School of Data Sciences and Information Technology.

The curriculum, based on American academic standards, will be tailored to Pakistan’s cultural context and national requirements, maintaining a balance between global competitiveness and local significance.

The project has been led by Shahzeb Awan, a lawyer educated at the University of London, and Jahanzeb Burana, a finance expert trained at Harvard. The official collaboration with ASU was concluded in April 2025 at ASU’s Tempe campus located in the United States.

What Distinguishes NIT?

ASU representatives have highlighted that the institute is going to provide a student-centered educational experience, preparing young Pakistanis with the skills that are much required for them to thrive in a rapidly evolving global market.

A highly appealing aspect of the partnership is the establishment of dual degree programs, enabling students to earn degrees from both ASU and NIT.

Students will have chances to engage in exchange programs and study abroad at ASU locations in Washington D.C., California, and at 30 international partner universities through the ASU-Cintana Alliance.

Government Support and Effect Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the initiative as a groundbreaking advancement for Pakistan’s education sector after meeting with ASU representatives on July 24. “NIT will serve as a premier institution that enables our young people to succeed on a global scale.”

“NIT will be a world-class institution that empowers our youth to thrive in global markets,” he remarked, reiterating the government’s support for modern, job-oriented education.

Looking Ahead

The launch of NIT is expected to not only open new academic opportunities for Pakistani students, but it will also

  • Create employment
  • Enhance research capacity
  • Improve Pakistan’s international academic reputation

Education experts believe the project could serve as a blueprint for future collaborations, bridging Pakistan’s education system with world-class global institutions.
