In a landmark step toward modernizing the country’s aviation infrastructure, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced that all airports across the nation will soon become fully cashless zones. The initiative is intended to revolutionize how passengers and vendors conduct transactions—replacing traditional cash payments with digital, contactless options.

A New Era of Digital Payments

Under this ambitious plan, passengers and airport staff will be able to pay for every service—from parking and food to retail purchases and lounge access—through QR code-based digital payments. The system will operate in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and leading fintech companies, guaranteeing secure and traceable transactions at every step.

PAA officials explained that the shift to cashless operations will eliminate the requirement for physical currency, reduce the risk of theft or counterfeit notes, and enhance overall efficiency in financial management.

Phase-Wise Implementation Across Airports

The rollout will take place in two major phases. The first phase will include Islamabad International Airport, Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, where the QR-based payment system is expected to go live within the next few weeks.

In the second phase, the program will expand to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot airports, before gradually being implemented at regional and domestic terminals across Pakistan.

According to the PAA, all shops, restaurants, and service vendors operating within airport premises will be required to adopt the digital system, ensuring a uniform and seamless payment experience for travelers.

Promoting Transparency and Innovation

A PAA spokesperson described the move as integral component of a broader effort to digitize airport operations and align with Pakistan’s National Fintech Vision, which encourages contactless, transparent, and trackable payment systems.

“The cashless model will help prevent fraud, promote accountability, and provide travelers with a smoother, more convenient experience,” the spokesperson said.

Towards a Smarter Aviation Future

Professionals of the industry have welcomed the move, calling it a significant milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation journey. With airports serving millions of passengers each year, the shift to cashless transactions is expected to set a benchmark for other public sector institutions, moving the country closer to a fully digital economy.
